Dick Smith donation to maintain wilderness walking track

Premier Paul Lennon, today announced a significant donation from entrepreneur Dick Smith would assist the State Government maintain the well-known Frenchmans Cap walking track.
Mr Lennon said the donation of $1 million dollars over a 10 year period was incredibly generous, and the State Government would contribute a further $500,000, over the same period.
“Mr Smith has shown philanthropic leadership in making this donation to the WILDCARE Gift Fund, and on behalf of the State Government and the people of Tasmania, I would like to thank him for his donation,” Mr Lennon said.
Mr Lennon said that the Frenchmans Cap track is one of Tasmania’s great bushwalks and the donation will help to ensure that its use remains sustainable into the future, while providing a great wilderness experience.
“The track leads to the summit of the magnificent white quartzite dome of Frenchmans Cap, the most prominent peak in the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park,” he said.
“It is in the heart of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, which is itself a powerful attraction for many visiting the State.
“The Parks and Wildlife Service will work with the WILDCARE Gift Fund to prioritise maintenance work for the track. I look forward to work commencing in the coming spring,” Mr Lennon said.
