Lake McKenzie
This walk takes an average of 3.5 hours but we took about 5 hours as we were
still having issues with Tiz's pack plus we had a nice at Basin Lake and Tiz
took plenty of photos along the way. The hiking trail is hard sand, which was
great, it is a bit hilly but according to the map you don't climb over 125 metres.
The track passes through a range of scenic bushland and wetlands such as banksia
forests, tall open forests and melaleuca swamps.
Basin Lake was a nice place to stop for lunch and we had been looking forward
to a swim. However just as we were getting ready to go in the water a tour guide
with a group came and we heard him tell them how fragile the lake was and that
he wasn't allowed to let them swim. The oils, especially from sunscreen are
damaging the lake and it doesn't have a lot (or none) of water flowing into
it to keep it flushed, plus it isn't very large. The lake has lots of frogs,
turtles and yabbies too. So we just enjoyed the rest and tried to keep out of
the sun, which isn't easy as there isn't much shade.
When you are almost at Central you come into a section of Kauri forest. These trees are very majestic with very tall and straight trunks. Then you descend into a gorgeous rainforest and cross Wanggoolba Creek via a boardwalk that you follow to Central Station. When you come out and can see the picnic areas you follow left along the top of the creek's valley until you cross a road and see a sign for the campground.
