60 Short Walks in Tasmania
The 60 Great Short Walks includes the best of Tasmania's walks. Whether you want a gentle stroll or a physical challenge; seaside or mountain; a long day's outing or a short one, Great Short Walks has plenty for you. The walks are located all through Tasmania and can generally be accessed from major roads and include a range of environments.
Frenchmans Cap Track
This track leads to the summit of the Frenchmans Cap (1446 m), the most prominent mountain peak in the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. The track is considerably harder than many other Tasmanian walks, including the Overland Track, so it is recommended that you gain experience on other Tasmanian walking tracks before attempting Frenchmans Cap. This is a T2 track which means that the surface may be rough and muddy over extended sections, especially across the Loddon Plains, and it may be steep in places. Most walkers spend between 3 and 5 days completing the return trip, a distance of about 23 km each way. The track starts at the signpost beside the Lyell Highway about 200 km from Hobart and 55 km from Queenstown.
Penguin Cradle Trail
The Penguin Cradle Trail was developed by the North West Walking Club. The complete walk is over a distance of 76km, and it is recommended that a party allow five to seven days for the trip. Crossroads provide access at a few points, allowing shorter sections to be explored. The Trail starts at the coast, and takes you though some rural areas and much seemingly untouched open woodland and rainforest. There are rugged mountain ranges, a canyon with a wild river running through it and some idyllic lakes with vistas of snow capped peaks.
South Coast Track
This walking track lies in the Southwest National Park and takes you through the heart of wild, inspiring country. It is more remote than some other walks in Tasmania, such as the Overland Track. It is recommended that you gain experience on other Tasmanian walking tracks before attempting, as you will be a long way from help should you need it. The 85 km South Coast Track is used by walkers between Cockle Creek and Melaleuca. Most people take about 6 to 8 days to complete the walk.
The Overland Track
The Overland Track from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair is a wilderness walk that travels through spectacular mountains, near waterfalls, and close to Tasmania's highest mountain, before finishing at Australia's deepest lake, Lake St Clair. It is 65km long and takes 6 days to walk.
The Tasmanian Trail
The Tasmanian Trail is a long distance, multi-purpose recreational trail extending from Devonport on the northern coast of Tasmania to Dover in the south. It has a length of 480 kilometres. The Trail is intended for use by walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders. The trail links up existing forestry roads and fire trails, country roads and occasionally crosses private land. Up to 90% of the Trail is on some form of made road or track.
